“Massage is the study of anatomy in Braille,” said Jack Meagher, a sports masseur to American star athletes and to horses on the U.S. Equestrian Olympic Team in the 1980s. “’A muscle is a muscle. …Through proper massage you reduce friction and increase output, whether you are dealing with a human or a horse,” said Meagher in a 1981 edition of the Boston Herald.

The same principles that govern full-body massage apply to scalp massage. It’s good for the body and it’s good for your sense of well-being. That’s why it is one of the services offered at Salon Trendz in Chicago.

A scalp massage’s physiological, aesthetic and emotional benefits are many, says management at the salon, which currently offers a 25% discount on the spa service. For only $30, you can get a scalp massage that will help relieve stress and encourage hairline health and beautiful hair.

Through methodical application of finger pressure, increased circulation is facilitated in the scalp region. Enhanced blood flow promotes the hair’s natural growth and shedding cycles, by restoring normal body function in this area. At the cellular level, blood carries nourishment to hair follicles, feeding the cells the nutrients they require to operate at full capacity.

Lustrous, Lovely Hair

Healthy follicles result in a head of shiny, lustrous hair – your crowning beauty. Product buildup, an untreated scalp condition, tight hats and hair bands, and stress can produce less than optimal conditions for beautiful hair. That’s why a professional scalp massage is something you might want to consider.

In the meantime, give yourself daily head massages in the shower. Wet your hair thoroughly and apply a liberal amount of shampoo. Starting at the hairline, work your fingertips – never your fingernails – in small circles from the forehead, along the crown of the head, and down the back toward the nape of the neck. Repeat this sequence several times and then rinse thoroughly.

No Stresses for the Tresses
Along with the soap suds, you will wash away loose skin cells and any buildup of sebum, an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands, leaving squeaky clean and lustrous hair that smells fresh. You just might rinse out a little stress, too. The lyrics from the musical “South Pacific” come to mind. “…I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair and send him on his way.”)

If you suspect dandruff, hair loss, skin irritation, headaches, or dull hair have a deep-seated medical cause, check with your health care provider. Some skin and hair conditions require more aggressive intervention than massage.

The $30 scalp massage special at Salon Trendz, a women-only hair salon in the outskirts of Chicago, saves customers $10 a pop. To schedule this treatment and/or the salon’s deep-conditioning service, call for an appointment at (708) 671-1333. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Thursdays, when the salon is open until 6:30 in the evening.

Japanese women are known for their smooth and straight hair. Although genetics may have a hand in it, that is not always the case. Just like anything in beauty, it can be achieved through the use of the proper techniques. Japanese Hair Straightening or Thermal Reconditioning is a method that straightens the hair while locking in moisture and shine.

Chicago Style – Japanese Hair Straightening first burst into the scene in the late 1990s in Japan but it quickly made it its way around the world, including the United States. Today, it has firmly established itself as one of the most popular treatments to get a better head of hair.

The Process
Japanese Hair Straightening makes use of chemicals to alter the texture of the hair. Most of the chemicals used, such as Liscio and Yuko, are manufactured in Japan. The entire process can last as long as three to six hours because it involves several steps. The hair is shampooed, heated under lamps, blown out, and ironed. Although it may sound like a lot, these steps are designed to not only straighten but also to give shine to the hair. After the process is completed, the hair must be kept away from moisture over the next 48 hours to retain its effects.

The Result
Japanese Hair Straightening guarantees permanently straight hair. Of course, the fact that hair grows means that it may need to be retouched after four to six months, depending on how fast it grows. What differentiates Japanese Hair Straightening from other straightening techniques is that the hair does not dry out. This means that it can move and reflect light the way naturally straight hair does.

Considerations
Japanese Hair Straightening works best on hair that has not been recently treated with chemicals. Avoid coloring, bleaching or curling your hair if you are planning on getting your hair straightened. Otherwise, the hair may end up dry and brittle from exposure to too many chemicals. If your hair was treated, tell the hairstylist so that the amount of chemicals used can be adjusted to achieve the best results. In most cases, a hair strand test is done to ensure that the hair will react well with the chemicals.

Aftercare
Maintain the soft, smooth texture of hair after straightening by protecting it from the sun. Although the systems involved in Japanese Hair Straightening were designed to keep the hair healthy, chemicals are still used. To keep the hair healthy, condition the hair frequently after the treatment in accordance to the recommendations of the hairstylist. Also, avoid coloring you hair for at least a month after it was straightened.

Frizzy, unruly hair can be a thing of the past thanks to Japanese Hair Straightening treatment of Chicago area – Salon Trendz.

Getting highlights can be a quite a big leap for some people. But whether it is one that moves backwards or forward is another story. If you are thinking about getting Balayage hair highlighting, there are some things that you need to know to ensure that you are always in step when it comes to style.

The first step to getting good Balayage hair highlights is knowing what you want. Because Balayage technique hair highlighting is done freehand, a softer and more natural look is achieved. If this is your preference, then you are good to go. On the other hand, if you want the color contrasts to be more obvious, you are better off with foiling or other similar highlighting methods.

Do your research.
You need to know what you are getting into before you actually do it. Balayage technique is a new method that is used to add highlights to the hair. It is different from other techniques because the colors are hand-painted to achieve the best results.

Choose the right hair color can dictate whether it is chic or sham.
The color that you choose to highlight your hair should not just complement the rest of your locks. It should also look good with the rest of your features. For example, pink-toned skin looks best with blonde highlights. For those with yellow undertones, a deep gold tone is a no-no. Ask your hairstylist for recommendations on what color highlights will look best on you.

Change your shampoo.
Protect your Balayage highlights by using a color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner. These products are especially formulated to prevent the color from fading too fast and from drying out.

Prepare an aftercare program.
Balayage hair highlighting is actually a gentler method compared to the other traditional highlighting techniques because it does not make use of heat. But getting a deep conditioning treatment after can make the hair even softer and smoother.

Watch out for touchups.
Roots start to show at around six to eight weeks after the Balayage hair highlights. This is only normal because hair grows. You can either color the hair yourself or go to the salon to have them fixed. A word of caution: do-it-yourself highlight jobs are not easy. This is because highlights only target certain portions of the hair which may be difficult to duplicate.

The right salon can make or break you.
Knowing what color to use or what kind of highlighting technique is best is only half the battle. This is why you need to go to a salon that you can trust to do a good job. Find a place where the hair stylists have the experience and the skill to give you Balayage hair highlights that will give you your best look yet.

How to Apply Mascara Correctly

1. Place the brush horizontally at the base of your lashes and wiggle it side to side as you move it from root to tip.

2. Holding the wand diagonally (at about an 80- degree angle), sweep it over your lashes at the outer corners to fan and separate them.

3. Use what is left on the brush for your bottom lashes. Hold the wand perpendicular to the eye and skim the tip very lightly over your lower lash line.

Q. Why do I get raccoon eyes when I wear mascara on my lower lashes?

A. Using a full – size brush on tiny lower lashes can glob on too much product as you apply. The extra mascara often casts an unflattering shadow under the eyes, and it also may cause you to rub the area and smear the pigment.

Q. How can I prevent mascara from smudging on my brow bone?

A. Your enviably long lashes are to blame. For mess – free application, makeup artists suggest looking down into a handheld mirror when sweeping on mascara, then waiting five seconds for it to dry before looking up.

Q. Are new Lash-Growth serums the end of mascara as we know it?

A. The newest one might be. The first treatment expected to be approved by the FDA for growing lashes could hit counter this year. Created by allergen, it contains an ingredient used in a glaucoma medication that was also found to make lashes longer and fuller. But you still need mascara to darken lashes.
