Green Beauty Habits Make a World of Difference
The Green Movement is an international phenomenon, stretching from the United Nations to the far corners of the Earth. It’s a response to warnings about global warming, increased energy costs, diminishing natural resources and growing evidence that our future wellbeing depends on immediate changes in our behavior now.
How to respond to grim predictions can be overwhelming, but taking baby steps can help us overcome our inertia. Start small. Do something – anything – and you will have already begun to reduce your carbon footprint.
Wondering where to begin? Chicago’s Salon Trendz Palos Heights suggests you begin going green in the master bath, where everyone starts their day. Changes in beauty routines can
make a “world of difference.”
- Use a low-flow shower head. You’ll use half the water with these updated “green” models, especially if you get the latest haircut for women – one of those sassy bobs that every one is requesting at the hair salon. Washing short hair is a cinch!
- Use organic soaps, makeup, hair products and other toiletries. A lot of these green companies give back a percentage of earnings to environment-saving projects.
- Use compact fluorescent bulbs in your bathroom. They cost a little more initially, but use less energy per year and last longer than standard bulbs.
- Air dry your hair. Wash it the night before and skip the blow-dryer.
- Consider getting your hair permanently straightened. Not only will you get shiny, manageable hair, you’ll reduce your energy consumption. Instead of using lots of electricity to blow-dry and flat-iron your hair every day, your Japanese hair straightening will help you save money on your utility bills and use less electricity produced by carbon-emitting power plants. Japanese hair straightening is effective for six to 12 months, which also means you’ll use less gas driving to the hair salon for beauty upkeep and use fewer hair products packaged in plastic.
- Buy organic cotton balls, which are not subject to pesticides and bleaches.
- Buy super-size bottles of shampoo and conditioning products to save money and resources. Recycle the plastic containers when you’re done.
- Turn off the water while you soap up and brush your teeth. You’ll save gallons.
- Open the bathroom window instead of using the ventilation fan.
- Use bathroom tissue manufactured from 100% recycled paper goods.
- Purchase replacement tins of blush and foundation to insert in your compact.
- Use an old cleaned mascara wand to brush brows instead of buying a new brow comb with all its packaging.
- Hang damp towels immediately, so you don’t have to launder them as often.
- Dispose of your empties responsibly. Ask your local waste-management company how to safely get rid of nail polish bottles, hair spray cans and hair dye bottles.
- And, of course, do as your mama says. Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
Now, that wasn’t so bad was it? It’s that simple to go green. One baby step leads to another and before you know it you will be a Mean Green Eco Machine!.
